Not sure if it is freezing or if the repetitive bouncing over the ice is causing failure. They are not designed for that after all. I use my smitty for early ice when I need to walk out. It's easier to pull on straight ice or hard packed snow. Less drag then sled. Once ice is thickens it's snowmobile time, then my truck so I go to sled at that point. No cons for me.
